  18. <p>     Like all the corporations now downsizing, like all the revelers
  19. now recovering, brassy comedian SANDRA BERNHARD, Madonna's ex-best
  20. friend, is cultivating a more somber, contemplative '90s persona.
  21. In her new book, Love, Love, and Love, a collection of short
  22. stories and musings, Sandra explores the painfulness of relationships.
  23. "This book is a reaction to the '80s," she says, "all that superficial,
  24. bad, brat-pack writing, all that insincerity and fear of emotion."
  25. There is humor too, like a spoof ("a homage, if you will") of
  26. the raw, tormented writing style of cult novelist Paul Bowles.
  27. A semiserious Sandra will appear onscreen as well, in Inside
  28. Monkey Zetterland, billed as a film about "truth and beauty
  29. or the lack of it," and in Dallas Dolls. Have no fear: Sandra
  30. says, "I'll never stop being funny."
